The Victorian Era
Did you know that Queen Victoria was the first English monarch to have her name given to the period of her reign whilst she was still alive?

Rapid developments and changes took place during the Victorian Era.  The development of the national railway network, that linked the city and country, meant that more people were able to travel.
In 1825 George Stephenson's Locomotion was the first steam locomotive for pulling rolling stock.  At that time, the track was 9 miles long, allowing visits to coastal resorts, football matches and race meetings.  Bank holidays were introduced in this period, allowing workers to have days away in coastal areas.  Blackpool and Brighton became famous coastal resorts where amusement piers were built to entertain people.

In this age before television and computer games, the most common form of entertainment was reading.  The richer children had rocking horses to play with and the poorer ones had toys made of wood or metal as there was no plastic in the Victorian Era.  Many parents would read aloud to their children to keep them entertained.

The most popular toys were:
Noah's Ark  Dolls Houses  Rocking Horses  Teddy Bears
